I want to add a comment about this because I’ve seen some re-blogs of it full of misinformation or simply missing the point.
1. Uploading something to the internet does not instantly mean that the original artist loses all rights to their work. The same goes for uploading it to Deviant Art or several other image sharing sites. Often they have the option to choose the copyright you wish to retain.
2. Creative Commons is not a blanket term that means ‘anyone can do whatever they want with anything ever’, as some seem to think. There are many different options under Creative Commons.
3. Read about Creative Commons - http://creativecommons.org/
4. If you are unable or unwilling to research or ask an artist their permission then simply don’t use their work.
5. Failing to receive permission or denial from an artist is the same thing as being told no.
6. Fair use is a lot more complicated than simply wanting something and taking it. There are guidelines. Read about them - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
7. Taking someone’s work and using it to promote yourself is an indefensible position. That embarrassment and rage you feel if you’ve been caught? That’s probably the little sliver of a conscience you have left. The anger you feel at being caught should be directed at yourself and not the person you ripped off.
8. We’ve all done stupid things, especially when younger and not as educated. If you screwed up don’t try to defend yourself. If you simply admit it and rectify the situation most likely there will not be a grudge. If you fear admitting the screw up due to legal issues then just take the offending image down and DO NOT DO IT AGAIN.
Though i don’t think it warrants a response, we do have an excellent opportunity to see into the mind of someone who may or may not have a different opinion on artists rights.
Also, for the record i’ve never been in contact with this person or asked/encouraged anyone to defend me or my work.
be used as ‘clipart’ …nuff said.
